Lecture: The TAO of Topic Maps (10:30-12:00)

Topic Maps is an international standard (ISO 13250:2003) for knowledge integration. This lecture consists of an introduction to the basic concepts of Topic Maps and a presentation of a number of different case studies, ranging from semantic portals to knowledge management and information integration. The lecture will include an extended demonstration of topic maps in practice.

Workshop: Designing and Creating Topic Maps (13:00-17:00)

This workshop will provide a practical, hands-on introduction to more advanced concepts in Topic Maps, including syntax, ontology design, querying, and application development. During the workshop, participants will assist the instructor in creating a simple topic map, after which they should be capable of creating their own. The workshop will also provide an understanding of the relationship between Topic Maps and RDF and the role of Topic Maps in the Semantic Web.
